Russian Assassination Plot Against Rheinmetall CEO Uncovered
U.S. intelligence discovered a Russian plot to assassinate Armin Papperger, CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, which has been supplying Ukraine. The plot is part of broader plans targeting defense industry executives in Europe. German security services protected Papperger, and Rheinmetall has increased production of military supplies.
U.S. intelligence discovered earlier this year that Russia planned to assassinate Armin Papperger, CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, a major supplier of artillery shells and military vehicles to Ukraine, according to CNN.
The assassination plot aimed at Papperger was one of several Russian government efforts to target European defense industry leaders supporting Ukraine. The United States alerted Germany, enabling German security services to protect Papperger, sources told CNN.
Rheinmetall stated that it routinely consults with security authorities to implement necessary measures. The company, one of the largest global producers of artillery and tank shells, has ramped up production following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and announced plans to open an ammunition factory in Ukraine this February.
