London Stocks Tumble Amid Rising Inflation and Rate Cut Uncertainty
London stocks fell on Wednesday after strong domestic inflation data led investors to reconsider the likelihood of an August rate reduction by the Bank of England. The FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 were both down, with industrial metals miners and Babcock shares suffering notable declines.
London stocks opened lower on Wednesday after surprisingly strong domestic inflation data prompted investors to scale back bets for an August rate cut by the Bank of England.
The blue-chip FTSE 100 index declined 0.2%, on course for its third consecutive loss, if the current trend persists. The mid-cap FTSE 250 was down 0.3% as of 0704 GMT. British consumer prices data revealed that inflation remained steady at 2%, defying forecasts of a slight drop, heightening uncertainty over the central bank's next move.
The probability of an interest rate cut in August plummeted to around 33% from 49% before the data release. Yields on the 2-year government bond edged higher, while the pound gained against the dollar, further weighing on market sentiment.
Industrial metals miners led sectoral declines with a 1.3% fall, correlating with lower base metal prices. Shares of Babcock dropped 4% after the British engineering firm missed operating profit projections.
