The All India Congress Committee spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Rathore has called on the state government to declare the 'Alternaria' disease in apple crops an 'epidemic' and seek central government intervention to combat the crisis.

Addressing media in Shimla on Thursday, Rathore stated, 'Danger clouds are looming over the apple economy of Himachal Pradesh, which is worth Rs 5000 crore. The apple orchards have come under the grip of a disease called 'Alternaria,' impacting the size and color of apples, causing premature leaf fall, and worrying orchardists.'

Rathore noted that 'Alternaria' disease has reached epidemic levels in some regions, affecting up to 95% of orchards. He urged immediate state and central governmental action to prevent further spread, drawing parallels to the 1982-83 scab disease outbreak managed with central help. He emphasized the need for comprehensive research to eradicate 'Alternaria' and raised questions about the quality of medications available to treat the disease.

Additionally, Rathore expressed concerns about potential disease importation through foreign apple plants, advocating strict quarantine measures before their distribution to farmers. He warned that without swift action, apple production in Himachal Pradesh could become unsustainable, further worsening the financial situation for apple growers.
