The Bhairabi-Sairang New Line Railway Project, which aims to connect Mizoram's capital to the rest of India, is in its final stages of completion. This initiative is part of Indian Railways' broader effort to enhance connectivity in the northeastern states through various new railway projects.

Under the Ministry of Railways' capital connectivity projects, new railway lines are being constructed to link all state capitals in the northeastern region. Sabyasachi De, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway, emphasized the project's transformative potential for Mizoram in terms of communication and commerce.

"The economical and environmentally friendly railway services will positively impact almost all development projects in the state. The 51.38 km new line between Bhairabi and Sairang is divided into four sections and has already reached 93% completion," said De. He noted that the project includes multiple tunnels and bridges in challenging terrain.

The total length of tunnels for the project is 12,853 meters, with 12,807 meters already completed. The project comprises 55 major and 89 minor bridges, with construction completed for 47 major and 87 minor bridges so far.

The tallest pier in the project, Pier P-4 of Bridge No. 196 near Sairang Station, stands at 104 meters tall, 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar. The project also includes five road-over bridges and six road-under bridges, with four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.

Despite numerous challenges such as harsh working conditions due to prolonged monsoons and hilly terrain, Northeast Frontier Railway is committed to the project's timely completion. The new rail line is poised to enhance connectivity, support local industries, and boost tourism in Mizoram.

Travel times between Mizoram's capital and nearby Assam will be significantly reduced, facilitating nationwide access and ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential goods, De added.
