Government Hikes STT on Futures and Options to Curb Retail Participation
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an increase in the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on futures and options (F&O) trades to mitigate retail investors' engagement in these high-risk financial instruments. This move follows concerns over speculative trade and the rise of inexperienced investors in the F&O segment, prompted by potential quick profits but often leading to significant losses.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Tuesday that the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) will be increased on futures and options (F&O) trades beginning October 1, in a bid to discourage retail investors from participating in these high-risk financial instruments.
The new rates will see STT on the sale of an option in securities rise from 0.0625% to 0.1% of the option premium, and STT on the sale of futures in securities increase from 0.0125% to 0.02% of the futures trading price.
This measured decision comes as part of the Union Budget for 2024-25, following concerns raised in the Economic Survey about the growing speculative trade among retail investors in F&O trading. Market experts highlight that while F&O trading can yield significant profits, it also carries substantial risks, particularly for those without the requisite knowledge or risk appetite.
