Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has filed a plea seeking to quash an FIR registered against her for comments made about Rekha Sharma, chief of the National Commission for Women (NCW). The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the police in this regard.
During the hearing, the Delhi Police lawyer handed over a copy of the FIR to Moitra's legal team, which they had not previously received. Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, representing Moitra, told the court that despite a prior written request, the document was not provided earlier.
The Delhi Police lawyer also questioned the maintainability of Moitra's plea. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, who presided over the matter, has scheduled further arguments for November 6. The FIR, registered under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertains to a tweet Moitra posted, which allegedly insults modesty and is related to an incident involving the NCW Chief during a stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.
