Hundreds of students gathered in Delhi's national capital on Sunday, demanding justice for three UPSC aspirants who tragically lost their lives due to flooding in the basement of an IAS Coaching Centre in Old Rajendra Nagar. The heartbreaking incident on Saturday evening has fueled concerns among the student community, who are demanding action against perceived negligence by authorities.
The victims, identified as Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Kerala, have sparked a wave of protests. Aman Kumar Yadav, an IAS aspirant, told ANI that the protesters demand authorities to disclose the actual number of casualties and provide immediate compensation to the victims' families.
Protesters like Aman are also calling for accountability and severe punishments for coaching centers and landlords with unsafe basement facilities. The incident has heightened stress levels among students, who are already under pressure to succeed in their exams. Protesters want better maintenance of electrical installations and stringent action against profiteering flat owners providing subpar living conditions.
During the protest, students blocked the main carriageway leading to Pusa Road near Karol Bagh Metro Station, significantly impacting traffic and access to nearby hospitals. Despite repeated requests from DCP Central and DM Central, the students were eventually removed due to the massive public inconvenience.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena termed the incident as 'unfortunate and unacceptable,' voicing his anguish on social media. AAP MP Swati Maliwal described the disaster as 'murder' and demanded FIRs against top officials for gross negligence.
Opposition figures, including Delhi BJP Chief Virendraa Sachdeva and MP Bansuri Swaraj, have called for comprehensive inquiries into alleged corruption within the Delhi government and Municipal Corporation. They accuse local authorities, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and MLA Durgesh Pathak, of failing to heed multiple warnings to clean drainage systems, leading to the tragic incident.
On Sunday, the Delhi Police arrested both the owner and coordinator of the coaching center, taking them to court from Rajender Nagar Police Station. The ongoing investigation is expected to shed more light on the circumstances that led to the needless loss of young lives.
