Telecom Giants Restore Connectivity in Landslide-Hit Wayanad to Aid Rescue Efforts

Measures include installing additional towers, offering free data to customers, and transforming stores into relief collection points to support affected communities.

Efforts to restore essential communication channels in Wayanad, Kerala, hit by massive landslides, are underway by telecom providers. Key players BSNL, Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vi have augmented infrastructure to ensure continuous coverage, crucial for rescue teams, government officials, and the public.
Numerous control rooms, relief distribution centers, and emergency response teams have activated to support Wayanad residents. BSNL has introduced 4G services in Chooralmala and Mundakkai and provided diesel engines to keep towers operational during power outages. Rapid internet for district administration and toll-free numbers for the Health Department are also in place.
A dedicated tower by Reliance Jio, deployed on state disaster management authorities' request, bolsters connectivity. Airtel offers free data and extended bill payment dates for prepaid and postpaid customers, respectively. Its stores in Kerala serve as relief collection points. Vi follows suit with free data and extended payment deadlines, ensuring uninterrupted service in the disaster's wake.
Amid the devastation, over 200 deaths have been reported. Efforts to recover bodies continue, emphasizing the critical role robust telecom connectivity plays in facilitating rescue and relief operations.
