INDIA alliance leaders gathered outside the Makar Dwar in Parliament on Tuesday to protest against the Central government's imposition of an 18% GST on health and life insurance. The protest saw participation from prominent figures, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Congress MP Jebi Mather vocally opposed the GST on insurance, arguing that no such tax should be applied to health and life insurance policies. Mather stated that this decision reflects a lack of respect for human faith, particularly affecting the poor. Speaking to ANI, she said, 'The central government has imposed an 18% GST on insurance, taken by the poor as a form of solace, which signifies a lack of respect for human faith.'

On August 2, AITMC leader and MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay also criticized the Union government, labeling the 18% GST on medical and health insurance 'anti-people' and detrimental to citizens. He highlighted that the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised the issue. Bandyopadhyay urged the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, to immediately withdraw the GST, warning that more extensive protests could follow.
