A 30-year-old woman suffered 90 per cent burn injuries after allegedly attempting to immolate herself in Lucknow's Vikramaditya Marg area, police reported on Tuesday. The woman, Anjali Jatav, cited torture by her husband and in-laws as the motive behind her drastic action.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav claimed in a post on X that Jatav had come to Lucknow for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's 'janata darbar' but felt compelled to take the extreme step after failing to get heard.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lucknow Central) Raveena Tyagi confirmed the incident, disclosing that Jatav, a mother of a one-year-old boy, had accused her husband and his family members of physical and mental harassment. Quick response by police personnel extinguished the flames, and she was admitted to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital.

Authorities in Unnao have since arrested Jatav's husband and brother-in-law on harassment charges. Reacting to the incident, Yadav criticized the BJP government for neglecting public welfare post-elections, demanding the best possible treatment for Jatav. Official sources stated Jatav did not meet the chief minister or visit the 'janata darbar' the day of the incident.
