Assam DGP Restricts Border Entry Amid Bangladesh Turmoil

Amid political instability in Bangladesh, Assam DGP GP Singh stated that only Indian passport holders can enter the state via designated points. This decision comes as part of heightened security measures by the Assam police and BSF, especially ahead of Independence Day, following recent tensions in Bangladesh.

Amid escalating turmoil in Bangladesh, Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh announced that only Indian passport holders will be granted entry into the state through designated checkpoints. "We are clear that we will not allow any unauthorized entry into Assam," Singh declared, emphasizing the safeguarding of national borders. Recently, 78 students, including 60 from Assam, returned from Bangladesh, underscoring the enforcement of strict entry requirements.

DGP Singh outlined the security measures taken over the past three days, including video conferences with all SPs, senior BSF officials, and the Union Home Secretary. Assam's border districts—Cachar, Karimganj, Dhubri, and South Salmara—are on high alert, with joint patrolling conducted by Assam Police and the BSF. "Our border is now in a strong position, and any unauthorized entry attempts will be dealt with legally," Singh stated during his visit to Tinsukia on Thursday.

In a security review meeting ahead of Independence Day, Singh mentioned the presence of an ULFA-I group near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Measures are being taken to neutralize this threat and prevent subversive activities. Singh urged ULFA-I to maintain peace and resolve grievances through dialogue with the government. Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, mentioned that the Indian government has instructed strict border security, allowing only those with valid passports and visas. This statement followed recent political chaos in Bangladesh, including the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, protests, and the appointment of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as the interim government head.
