Nationwide Protests Amplify Following Rape and Murder of Doctor in Kolkata

Healthcare professionals across India have mobilized in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. Representatives from key medical associations met with the Union Ministry of Health, demanding immediate and concrete measures for the safety of healthcare workers.

Representatives of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Resident Doctors' Associations of Government Medical Colleges & Hospitals in Delhi convened with the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare following an incident involving a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Their demands centered on the safety and security of healthcare staff.

The Ministry of Health assured the representatives that the government is aware and sensitive to their concerns. Notably, 26 states have legislations protecting healthcare workers. The Ministry pledged to form a committee to recommend further measures, involving all stakeholders, including state governments. Moreover, they urged the protesting doctors to resume duties given the rising cases of Dengue and Malaria.

IMA National President Dr. Asokan emphasized the need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in addressing the incident. He announced that they would officially write to the PM, underscoring the urgency of addressing women's safety. Protests continued nationwide, including a significant demonstration by doctors at AIIMS, Delhi, demanding a Central Protection Act.
