Doctors and medical students of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata staged a protest on Tuesday, marking the 12th day of their agitation over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Demonstrators turned to street graffiti to voice their anguish and dissatisfaction over unmet demands.
Protesting students expressed their intent to abide by a Supreme Court order, hoping it would address their grievances. They distanced themselves from political parties, canceling a planned march that coincided with a political event. In Chandigarh, doctors also took to the streets, providing open-road OPD services as part of their protest.
PGIMER Resident Doctors' Association Secretary Dr. Parneet Reddy stated their protests would continue until justice is served and the Central Protection Act is implemented. He questioned the delay in government action. Meanwhile, the CBI's investigation on the case remains ongoing, with plans to conduct a polygraph test on the accused.
The West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Hospital dating back to January 2021. Prominent artists joined the protests, demanding justice for the victim. Nationwide, doctors and civil societies have echoed calls for safety and severe punishment for the accused.
