The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) has taken an urgent petition to the Supreme Court following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. According to a press release from FAIMA, the association commended the Chief Justice of India for his swift attention to the working environment of resident doctors and his commitment to improving their conditions and security.
This tragic event has catalyzed nationwide protests, raising significant concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals across the nation. FAIMA's petition underscores the necessity for enhanced security and improved working conditions for doctors, with a particular emphasis on female practitioners who regularly face threats while performing their duties.
The key demands articulated by FAIMA include the installation of CCTV cameras in sensitive hospital areas, adherence to the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, and the establishment of a 24x7 distress call facility. Additional requests include the representation of resident doctors in a newly formed National Task Force to address real-time safety issues and formulate extensive guidelines.
Furthermore, FAIMA advocates for interim measures such as ensuring equitable bed-to-doctor ratios and providing secure resting areas until the National Task Force's recommendations are fully implemented. The association is also calling for a clear timeline for the enforcement of these recommendations, which are deemed critical for allowing doctors to work in secure and respectful conditions.
FAIMA is optimistic that the Supreme Court's intervention will result in swift, impactful actions, thereby bolstering the security framework within the healthcare sector. The heinous assault and murder of the trainee doctor have incited widespread outrage among medical professionals and the general public.
In response, the Supreme Court has established a 10-member National Task Force to deliberate on measures for preventing violence and ensuring safe working environments for medical staff. The task force includes prominent figures like Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin. The trainee doctor was tragically discovered dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
