A low-pressure system formed over the West Central Bay of Bengal is poised to unleash heavy rain and thunderstorms on the northwest Bay off the coasts of North Andhra and South Odisha. A shear zone, running roughly along 16°N over north peninsular India between 3.1 km to 7.6 km above mean sea level, is noted to tilt southwards with height. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned about heavy rain in isolated spots in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Tirupattur districts today.
On September 24 and 25, light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected in several parts of North Tamil Nadu and isolated areas of South Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. From September 26 to 20, scattered light to moderate rain will continue over these regions.
Strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph will likely prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions tomorrow. The IMD predicts that North Tamil Nadu will see moderate rain with lightning over the next seven days, coupled with temperatures soaring 2-4°C above normal. This scenario is expected to lead to hot and uncomfortable weather in isolated pockets across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area.
In Chennai and its suburbs over the next 24 hours, partly cloudy skies and intermittent rain are anticipated. The city can expect thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall. Temperatures are forecast to peak at around 36-37°C, with minimum temperatures hovering around 26-27°C.
