The Punjab High Court has chosen not to postpone the Panchayat elections throughout the state, despite requests to do so. However, it has placed a hold on the election process in certain villages where candidates struggled to file their nominations due to various complaints.
Approximately 250 petitions, alleging electoral irregularities, have flooded the High Court. The next hearing on this matter is slated for October 14, just ahead of the elections scheduled for October 15. Nominations opened on September 27, aiming to fill 13,237 'Sarpanch' and 83,437 'Panch' positions.
Criticism arose from Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, who accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of candidate filing issues linked to official negligence. Tensions further escalated as AAP and Congress candidates collided violently in Zira, prompting police intervention and maintaining law and order.
