Maharashtra's Guillain-Barre Syndrome Outbreak Raises Concerns

Amid a surge of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases, Maharashtra is grappling with 205 suspected and 177 confirmed diagnoses. Authorities have reported eight deaths, with four confirmed as GBS. The outbreak's epicenter in Pune has spurred intensified surveillance, water plant closures, and heightened public health measures to curb the disease's spread.

The Maharashtra Health Department revealed a worrying rise in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases, with 205 suspected patients and 177 confirmed diagnoses across the state. Of the eight reported deaths, four have been conclusively linked to GBS.

Concentration of cases in regions like Pune has prompted intensified surveillance from state health authorities. The Pune Municipal Corporation recently sealed 30 private water plants in the Nanded village and surrounding areas after water samples failed safety tests, some showing contamination with Escherichia coli. These areas are pinpointed as the outbreak's epicenter.

On February 3, a high-level meeting was conducted by the Union Health Minister with key stakeholders from Maharashtra's health sector to strengthen testing and treatment measures for those impacted by GBS. The syndrome, characterized by muscle weakness and potential paralysis, is an autoimmune disorder that prompts the body to attack its own peripheral nervous system.
