India's Sugar Production Dips by 12%: A March Towards Ethanol
Sugar production in India decreased by 12% to 197 lakh tonnes by February 15 of the current marketing year, primarily due to reduced output in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The shift towards ethanol has led to a significant diversion of sugar, as reported by ISMA.

In a significant development, India's sugar output experienced a notable decline of 12%, registering at 197 lakh tonnes by mid-February, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA).
The decrease is largely attributed to diminished production in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The country's sugar marketing year extends from October to September, and current figures reflect the diversion of sugar towards ethanol production.
ISMA reports indicate that sugar production until February 15, 2025, shows a decrease from the previous year's 224.15 lakh tonnes to 197.03 lakh tonnes. Ethanol-related sugar diversion also increased, evidently impacting total sugar output.
