Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has initiated a probe into a contentious fashion show held in Gulmarg that has drawn widespread condemnation for supposedly offending societal sentiments. Abdullah criticized the event, emphasizing that it should not have occurred, particularly during the holy month of Ramzan.
"We have ordered an inquiry. A private event ran for four days, featuring a fashion show that has hurt societal sentiments. The nature of this event, based on what I have observed, should not have taken place at any time of year, especially during Ramzan," stated Abdullah. He clarified that the event was privately organized without any governmental involvement or authorization, adding, "This was a private function without government involvement, and no permission was sought. We will respond decisively if any legal boundaries were crossed."
Critics, including Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, described the fashion show as a direct assault on local cultural values. "Organizing such an event during Ramzan is disgraceful; it is an outright attack on our cultural heritage. We demand decisive action from the Chief Minister," he asserted. JKNC MLA Tanvir Sadiq echoed these sentiments, stating, "Even under normal conditions, semi-nude shows are unacceptable in J&K, known for its Sufi traditions. Both Abdullah and BJP MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia have raised concerns about maintaining peace in the region amidst a post-Article 370 scenario."
Meanwhile, CM Abdullah also addressed the tragic killing of three civilians in Billawar, Kathua—another source of contention. He called for an investigation free of political interference, highlighting concerns over disparate treatment among officials. He questioned the discretion applied to visits by Deputy CM and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma amidst ongoing investigations. (ANI)
