In a significant judicial development, the Central Government has announced the appointment of Justice Joymalya Bagchi from the Calcutta High Court to the Supreme Court of India. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news via social media platform X, citing the constitutional process followed.
This appointment comes following the recent recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium, bringing Justice Bagchi one step closer to possibly assuming the role of Chief Justice of India by May 2031, succeeding Justice K V Viswanathan.
Justice Bagchi carries over a decade of judicial experience, having started his career at the High Court of Calcutta in 2011. After a stint at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, he returned to Calcutta High Court in 2021. His appointment strengthens Calcutta's representation in the top court, joining Justice Dipankar Datta.
