Bumper Kharif Crop Yield Surpasses Government Targets

India's kharif foodgrain production is set to exceed government targets for the 2025-26 crop year, thanks to increased coverage and favorable monsoon rains. While some regions experienced flood damage, it was minimal relative to the total sown area. Oilseeds and pulses are also expected to perform well.

India's kharif foodgrain production is on track to surpass the government's target of 171.39 million tonnes for the 2025-26 crop year, driven by increased acreage and beneficial monsoon rains, according to Agriculture Commissioner P K Singh. Speaking on Monday, Singh indicated that challenges such as flood damage had minimal impact on the overall sown area.

Despite some regions experiencing heavy rainfall, the kharif crops coverage elevated to over 110 million hectares compared to past averages of 109.5 million hectares, a result of rising paddy and maize plantation. The productivity of oilseeds and pulses remains promising, underpinning positive projections for agricultural output.

As preparations for rabi (winter) sowing begin, particularly in early-harvested areas like Rajasthan, the government plans to support farmers through a campaign named 'Vikhist Krishi Abhiyan,' scheduled from October 3-18, deploying 2,100 teams to aid village farming communities.
