The Darjeeling Mandarin Orange has officially received the esteemed Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a landmark step announced by officials on Monday. With this recognition, the Darjeeling Organic Farmers Producer Organisation (DOFPO) takes ownership, supported by facilitators including Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (UBKV) and the Patent Information Centre (PIC).
The GI designation aims to revive the cultivation of the renowned Darjeeling Mandarin Orange, previously dwindling due to persistent virus and pest problems. The initiative seeks to register all farmers as 'Authorised Users,' empowering them to leverage the GI label and secure appropriate market value.
This long-awaited acknowledgment enhances the orange's authenticity and market value, enabling access to premium markets. Darjeeling MP Raju Bista expressed optimism regarding future economic opportunities, hoping for a ripple effect on other regional produce achieving GI status.
