Delhi Police Faces Over 9,000 Vacancies Amid Staffing Challenges

In an ongoing battle with staffing challenges, the Delhi Police currently has 9,248 unfilled positions across several ranks, according to information shared with Parliament. From Constable to Deputy Commissioner of Police, the vacancies exacerbate operational demands on a present force of 92,044 officers, the Ministry of Home Affairs revealed.
Specific data highlight the bureaucratic voids: 13 out of 60 positions for DCP and Additional DCP remain vacant. At the Junior Administrative Grade, 15 out of 54 Additional DCP roles are unfilled. The Assistant Commissioner of Police level sees 125 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 346, and 108 Inspector positions remain open.
The Sub-Inspector rank faces 1,039 vacancies, while 300 Assistant Sub-Inspector posts are not filled. Head Constables are short by 3,057, and the largest gap is among Constables, with 4,591 positions open. These figures were provided by Union Minister Nityanand Rai, who noted that ongoing retirements and promotions contribute to the fluid nature of staffing shortages.
