EU Parliament Greenlights 2027 Russian Gas Ban
The European Parliament has approved a plan to phase out Russian gas imports by the end of 2027. Despite some opposition from Hungary and Slovakia, the measure is expected to pass without changes. Further legislation to ban Russian oil imports is proposed for early 2026.
The European Parliament has advanced the EU's plan to eliminate Russian gas imports by late 2027, overcoming a significant legal hurdle before the ban becomes law. With a resounding vote of 500 in favor, the plan edges closer to final approval.
Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the EU expedited its efforts to sever energy ties with Moscow, once its primary gas supplier. The approved legislation will face a formal nod from EU ministers, anticipated early next year, with expectations of minimal to no amendments.
Despite resistance from Hungary and Slovakia, who maintain ties with Russia, the plan will curtail Russian liquefied natural gas imports by 2026 end and pipeline gas by September 2027 end. As of October, Russian gas constituted 12% of EU imports, a significant drop from 45% before the invasion.
