On Wednesday, Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat launched a scathing critique of the Centre's Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, labeling it an affront to Mahatma Gandhi and accusing the Modi administration of being driven by a complex related to their inaction during India's freedom struggle.
In reaction, the Lok Sabha engaged in a nearly 14-hour session debating the VB-G Ram G Bill, with opposition leaders urging for its referral to a Standing Committee. The ruling BJP defended the Bill as a substantial move towards a developed India by 2047. Tensions rose as Congress politicians opposed both the Bill's proposed renaming of MNREGA and its revised funding scheme.
Amidst these disputes, Congress declared nationwide protests to occur on December 17, accusing the BJP of eroding welfare rights in favor of centralized charity control. The protests, featuring images of Gandhi, aim to resist the perceived threat to his legacy. Meanwhile, Bhagat also commented on the government's failings concerning the Luthra brothers' deportation, whose nightclub led to tragic losses.
