In a significant stride towards bolstering maritime defense capabilities, India and the United States are inching closer to a landmark $3 billion agreement for the acquisition of six P-8I anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance aircraft. This deal is set to further fortify the Indian Navy's fleet, enhancing monitoring across crucial areas of responsibility.
The Indian Navy, already operating 12 P-8I aircraft from strategic bases in Arakonam and Goa, anticipates the green light from the Defence Ministry soon, followed by the Cabinet Committee on Security's approval. Despite prolonged discussions hindered by pricing disputes, recent improvements in Indo-US relations have expedited the proceedings.
Besides the immediate purchase, the Indian Navy's surveillance reach is set for a substantial upgrade with the addition of 15 MQ-9 Sea Guardian drones, projected to arrive by 2029. Complementing this is the induction of 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance drones into various defense branches, marking a comprehensive enhancement of the nation's surveillance infrastructure.
