India Bolsters Piped Gas Networks Amid LPG Shortage

Amid a prolonged LPG supply shortage, the Indian government is prioritizing the expansion of piped gas networks to mitigate pressure on LPG availability. By increasing commercial LPG supplies to states accelerating this rollout, the government aims to encourage a shift to a more stable gas supply. Economic and essential services are impacted.

The LPG supply crisis in India, now entering its third week, has prompted the central government to promote piped gas networks as a strategic response. By promising increased supplies of commercial LPG to states prioritizing these networks, the aim is to alleviate the pressure on cooking fuel availability.

The prolonged conflict in West Asia has restricted India's access to nearly 60 percent of its LPG supply. Consequently, the government shifted focus to domestic consumers, initially cutting off commercial supplies to industries. Now, supplies have been partially restored contingent upon state cooperation in expanding piped gas connections.

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas official Sujata Sharma emphasized the availability of piped natural gas (PNG), urging LPG users to transition where feasible. Additional incentives are offered to states proactively endorsing city gas distribution networks. These measures aim to curb excessive reliance on limited LPG imports while ensuring continued access to essential services.
