Yak Comeback: Reviving Traditional Livestock in Mechuka

The government has launched a yak reintroduction initiative in Mechuka, Arunachal Pradesh, to restore traditional livestock practices and boost livelihoods. Six yaks were distributed to farmers, and 45 farmers attended awareness sessions on scientific yak rearing to ensure the initiative's sustainability and success.

The remote Mechuka region in Arunachal Pradesh is witnessing a revival of traditional livestock practices through a new government yak reintroduction initiative. Officials revealed the drive aims to boost the livelihoods of tribal communities by reintroducing the yaks.

On Friday, the government distributed six yaks, including four females and two males, to local farmers. This move seeks to restore a yak-based income in the high-altitude Shi-Yomi district, where yak populations have dwindled over the years.

The Yak Reintroduction Initiative, orchestrated by ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak alongside local organizations, also educated 45 farmers through awareness sessions on scientific yak rearing. The program ensures the effort's sustainability while enhancing productivity.
