Slovakia's Stance on EU Sanctions Amid Druzhba Pipeline Dispute

Slovakia threatens to block the EU's latest sanctions against Russia until the Druzhba oil pipeline resumes operations. The pipeline outage, claimed to be caused by a Russian attack, has also led Hungary to veto EU support for Ukraine. Expectations are for diplomatic resolutions soon.

In a significant diplomatic move, Slovakia has announced its intent to block the European Union's new set of sanctions against Russia, citing the non-operational status of the Druzhba oil pipeline. The pipeline has been down since an alleged Russian attack in January.

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar emphasized the lack of alternative measures available to compel Ukraine and the European Commission to expedite pipeline repairs. He stated that Slovakia would not approve the EU's sanctions package until the Druzhba line is back online.

In a related standoff, Hungary has put a hold on a massive EU loan intended for Ukraine, adding pressure to the ongoing dispute. However, it is anticipated that Hungary's incoming leader, Peter Magyar, may lift the veto after assuming office.
