Hansraj College Suspends Students Amid Controversy: Free Speech at Stake

Hansraj College suspended 30 students, including union leaders, over allegations from defamation to violence. The suspensions, following a fest's misconduct, drew criticism from the student union, which sees it as an attack on democracy and demands the decision's reversal. Hansraj College has suspended approximately 30 students, including four key office bearers of its Students' Union, amid accusations of misconduct encompassing acts like defamation via social media and use of derogatory language.

The suspensions, announced between April 20 and 25, followed instances of alleged violence and disorder during the college's annual festival held on April 8 and 9. A notice issued on April 25 confirmed the suspension of union leaders, pending further disciplinary investigations. Efforts to reach College Principal Prof. (Dr.) Rama for commentary at the time proved unfruitful.

Suspended individuals include the elected representatives of the Hansraj College Students' Union for the 2025-26 term. Under the suspension, these students are forbidden from entering college grounds, except for participation in exams and assessments. The suspension's duration remains unspecified and termed as 'interim' until further orders are released.

Initial action on April 20 targeted a single student for breaches like defamation and derogatory conduct towards both teaching and non-teaching staff. A subsequent order identified 14 students for engaging in indiscipline, violence, and disrupting campus peace during the annual celebration.

The disciplinary measure has met with sharp rebuke from the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), calling it an affront to student governance and power abuse. DUSU President Aryaman Sai questioned, 'What's their crime? Speaking the truth? Exposing administrative lapses?' Sai accused the administration of trying to stifle student leadership and demanded the immediate lifting of suspensions, asserting that student voices won't be silenced.
