Christchurch is contemplating a multi-year agreement to host Super Rugby Pacific's Super Round after a successful event at the Te Kaha stadium. The city welcomed over 70,000 fans during the Anzac Day weekend, leading to rave reviews and declarations of success by Super Rugby Pacific's CEO, Jack Mesley.
ChristchurchNZ, the city's economic development agency, expressed interest in a longer-term arrangement. Ali Adams, the agency's Chief Executive, noted the success of existing multi-year sports deals and expressed a desire to make the Super Round a staple event in Christchurch alongside the Supercars championship.
The Super Round previously struggled with attendance in Melbourne but saw renewed success in Christchurch, pumping an estimated NZ$6 million into the local economy. Despite interest from other cities, Christchurch's strong pitch will be the starting point for future discussions.
