In a strategic move to bolster disaster management, India has unveiled a nationwide Cell Broadcast System (CBS), aiming to revolutionize emergency communication. Launched by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the system promises near real-time, geo-targeted alerts to millions of mobile users across the country.
The initiative represents a decisive shift toward proactive disaster preparedness, moving away from traditional reactive models. Developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) alongside the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, CBS is designed to ensure swift communication during crises, targeting specific geographic locations.
A nationwide trial showcased CBS's ability to deliver alerts simultaneously to vast populations, even amid network congestion. The system is multilingual and spans all telecom networks, offering unimpeded communication in both urban and rural settings. This advancement aligns with global efforts in disaster readiness, enhancing India's contributions to international early warning initiatives.
