Trump Proposes Gas Tax Suspension Amid Inflation Surge
President Donald Trump plans to reduce the federal gas tax to relieve soaring fuel prices amid the Iran war. This proposal requires congressional approval. Some Republicans and Democrats proposed similar suspensions. The tax funds road repairs, and states are cutting their own gas taxes to ease consumer burdens.
President Donald Trump announced plans on Monday to lower the 18-cent federal gas tax temporarily to combat rising fuel prices due to the Iran war. This move would require congressional approval from Trump's Republican-controlled Congress.
In response to reporters' questions, Trump confirmed his intention to suspend the tax, saying it would last 'till it's appropriate.' U.S. Senator Josh Hawley introduced legislation backing this suspension, continuing bipartisan efforts started earlier this year by some Democrats.
The gas tax, bringing in approximately $2.5 billion monthly for road funding, has been under scrutiny as more than $275 billion has been shifted from the general fund since 2008. State governments in Indiana, Kentucky, and Georgia are also reducing their gas taxes to alleviate consumer burdens, as nationwide prices reach $4.52 a gallon, the highest since 2022.
