Farmgate: Ramaphosa Addresses South Africa Amid Impeachment Revival
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is addressing the nation as impeachment proceedings are revived over a scandal involving stolen cash. Dubbed 'Farmgate,' the controversy questions his stance on corruption. The ANC has called a special meeting, while analysts speculate on the implications for Ramaphosa’s legacy.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was set to address South Africans on Monday evening as a court revived impeachment proceedings against him over a scandal involving stolen foreign cash from his ranch. The address was scheduled for 8 p.m., confirmed Ramaphosa's office.
The scandal, labeled as 'Farmgate' by the media, has been a significant embarrassment since it surfaced in 2022, challenging Ramaphosa's anti-corruption mandate. ANC's National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe commented that Ramaphosa has no intentions of resigning, with political analysts predicting a defensive stance from the president in his speech.
The ANC has scheduled a special National Executive Committee meeting to deliberate on the situation. Despite the ANC blocking impeachment in parliament earlier, the Constitutional Court ruled the vote invalid, calling for renewed investigations. Ramaphosa, denying any wrongdoing, has maintained his stance respecting the court's decision.
