In a landmark decision, an Australian court has ordered Fortescue Metals Group to compensate the Yindjibarndi people A$150 million for cultural loss due to mining activities.
This ruling is among the largest related to native title laws, acknowledging Indigenous rights and interests related to land impacted by the company’s operations.
Federal Court Judge Stephen Burley emphasized the extensive cultural damage inflicted by the Solomon Hub Project in Western Australia, where countless heritage sites were destroyed or significantly affected.
