The industrial units in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a key factory hub in central Maharashtra, should implement rainwater harvesting methods and focus on producing electricity through solar power, an official said on Wednesday.

The city has a vibrant industrial landscape, and efforts should therefore be made to optimise resource management, said Varsha Thakur-Ghuge, who has joined the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) as a Joint CEO.

She held her first meeting in the city with local officials and industrial association representatives.

''We have requested the industrial units here to manage and use resources carefully. The industrial units are instructed to prioritise undertaking water harvesting works. At the same time, residential areas under the gram panchayats should find alternative ways to get water so that their dependency on MIDC water will decrease,'' she told PTI.

The industries in the city should also manage their power consumption, the IAS officer said.

''There is a need to focus on power consumption. If residential consumers are generating electricity through solar power, industries should definitely adopt it as well. We have urged industries to start generating solar power using their rooftops,'' she said.

Besides water and power, solid waste management, roads, and land management were also discussed in the meeting, she added.
