The Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is embarking on a new initiative aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development. Announced in a recent press release, the plan involves installing old clothes collection boxes at 10 key Delhi Metro stations.

The collaborative effort between the government and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is designed to encourage citizens to recycle textiles, addressing one of the pressing environmental issues. Once collected, these garments will be recycled and transformed into useful products, according to the release.

Chief Minister Gupta highlighted the initiative's role in not only reducing textile waste but also enhancing sustainable development. The collection boxes, initially positioned at strategically selected Metro stations, aim to engage the public in recycling campaigns and raise awareness about clothing reuse.

The transportation terminals chosen include Shahdara, Mohan Estate, and Rohini West among others. These sites have been approved following security assessments and will serve as the initial rollout locations. Gupta emphasized transparency and efficiency throughout the process of clothing collection and recycling.

Once collected, the textiles will be sorted and made available for reuse via reputable NGOs and self-help groups, who will produce new items such as bags and rugs from them. The DMRC will facilitate the initiative further by providing dedicated spaces for the display and sale of upcycled products at the Metro stations.

Moreover, garments unsuitable for reuse will be sent to recycling units to be processed into materials like yarn and non-woven felt. The Civil Operations and Maintenance Department at DMRC has partnered with agencies experienced in recycled products to implement this project. The drive, aiming to reduce waste and promote sustainability, will be fully operational post-completion of the necessary formalities, as confirmed by the Chief Minister.
