The Delhi High Court has issued an interim order protecting actor Varun Dhawan from the unauthorized exploitation of his personality rights. The court restrained websites and social media platforms from using Dhawan's name, image, voice, or likeness through AI technologies, citing concerns over his commercial rights and public image.
Justice Jyoti Singh ruled in favor of Dhawan, highlighting concerns over AI-generated content depicting the actor in objectionable scenarios. The court instructed defendants to cease any commercial use of Dhawan's persona without explicit authorization, extending the order to halt sales of infringing merchandise.
The ruling mandates online platforms to take down offending content within 36 hours of notification, including AI-manipulated materials. The court emphasized that unauthorized use of a celebrity’s image can harm their reputation and privacy, urging comprehensive protection for Dhawan's persona in digital spaces.
