Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard has said that the people of Scotland do not want a second independence referendum, according to LBC Breaking. The leader met Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and told him that "a second independence referendum is unwanted by the people of Scotland". He reportedly said the referendum is unnecessary and that 2014 referendum was a once in a generation vote.

“There is no economic case for independence, especially with the Scottish National Party's new position of ditching the pound and new policy of turbo-charged austerity to bear down on the deficit."

The comments by Leonard seem to be in response to McDonnell's statements about the referendum. Two days ago, John McDonnell was reported to have said that a future Labour government would not block a second Scottish independence referendum. In an interview with journalist Iain Dale at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, John McDonnell said any decision about holding a vote would be up to the Scottish Parliament.

He said "They will take a view about whether they want another referendum. Nicola Sturgeon said by late next year or the beginning of 2021.”

He added: “We would not block something like that. We would let the Scottish people decide. That’s a democracy. There are other views within the party, but that’s our view"
