The flood situation in Karnataka continued to remain grim, with no let-up in rains. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team rescued 85 stranded residents including two pregnant women and two toddlers in Belthangady's Charmadi area today. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will visit the flood-affected areas of Mangaluru tomorrow. The state government pegged the damage caused by the floods at Rs 6,000 crore. The CM had on Friday announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each to the families of those killed in the flood and rain-related incidents.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the flood-hit Belagavi and Bagalkote today in Karnataka. She interacted with the officials and sought information on the rescue and relief measures initiated and losses incurred due to the calamity. She also interacted with displaced people taking shelter in the relief camps.
The continuous rains have wreaked havoc in many states of India including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka, affecting thousands of people and leaving hundreds stranded. A few days ago around 1000 army personnel were deployed in some districts of Karnataka as well as Maharashtra to carry out flood relief operations. 132,360 people of 28397 families were evacuated from five districts of Maharashtra on August 7.
