Record Exodus: New Zealanders Flee in Response to Economic Woes
New Zealand is witnessing a record exodus as unemployment rises, interest rates stay high, and economic growth stagnates. Statistics reveal 131,200 people left in the year ending June 2024. Many are relocating to Australia seeking better opportunities, with net migration expected to decrease due to a softer economy.
New Zealand is experiencing an unprecedented exodus, with 131,200 people departing the country in the year ending June 2024, the highest annual figure ever recorded, according to government statistics.
The data, released by Statistics New Zealand, highlights that nearly one-third of the emigrants were headed to Australia. Although net migration remains high, economists predict a decline as fewer foreign nationals are likely to move to New Zealand due to its weaker economic conditions.
Among the departing citizens, 80,174 were native New Zealanders—almost double the pre-pandemic figures. Merrily Allen, who works in dental administration, is among those planning to relocate to Hobart, Tasmania with her family in early 2025, citing better job opportunities as the primary reason for the move.
