In a concerning incident from Umaria, Madhya Pradesh, five individuals of a tribal family were admitted to a district hospital after they consumed rotis made from kodo millet, also known as cow grass or rice grass.
The episode occurred in the Nowrozabad area, involving three women, a child, and a man who fell ill following the meal. They were initially treated at Pali Community Health Centre before being transferred to the district hospital for further care.
Ravi Kol, one of the affected individuals, recounted the symptoms: dizziness and trembling ensued shortly after eating the rotis. The millet was part of their wages for farm labor. Officials emphasize the need to ensure kodo millet’s storage remains dry to prevent fungi, which can pose a serious health risk.
