Karnataka's Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao addressed concerns on Tuesday about social media claims alleging that eggs from a specific brand contain genotoxic substances that may cause cancer. He confirmed that samples have been collected for testing and that the government is prepared to take necessary actions based on the results.
Responding to Congress MLC Ramesh Babu's query during the Legislative Council's 'zero hour,' Rao emphasized that there's no immediate cause for public panic despite the viral claims. Social media reports noted traces of nitrofuran and nitroimidazole, potentially harmful substances, in a batch of eggs, although these chemicals are banned in poultry farming.
Amid rising concerns, the minister assured that the government would remain vigilant and coordinate with both state and central food safety authorities. He urged the public to be cautious of misleading information, underlining that a thorough investigation is in progress to allay fears and protect the poultry sector from misinformation impacts.
