Union Minister Anupriya Patel emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing healthcare delivery, launching an online training program focusing on AI's role in medical education. This initiative aims to bridge the gap caused by a shortage of medical professionals and bolster doctors' capabilities.
With more than 42,000 doctors already registered, the program developed by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) seeks to modernize medical education and provide doctors with foundational AI knowledge applicable in clinical practice, diagnostics, research, and medical education. The move is seen as necessary in addressing non-communicable diseases and tuberculosis in India.
Patel stressed the importance of AI adoption being guided by accountability, accessibility, and ethical use principles, ensuring tech advancements strengthen healthcare delivery. Dr Abhijat Sheth, president of NBEMS, highlighted the program's role in capacity building among doctors, reflecting the board's commitment to modernizing medical education.
