Medical supplies for clinics facing Sudan's humanitarian crisis may run out in two weeks unless new routes are found swiftly, warns the charity Save the Children. The Middle Eastern conflict, involving a U.S.-Israeli confrontation with Iran, has disrupted global supply routes, including airspace closures and shipping halts through the Strait of Hormuz.

Approximately $600,000 worth of critical medications are currently stuck in Dubai, according to the organization. Ninety government-run clinics in Sudan, which cater to around 400,000 patients, depend on these shipments as no in-country alternatives exist, Save the Children's global supply chain director, Willem Zuidema, reported to Reuters. Sudan's ongoing conflict has displaced millions, marking it as one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises. Zuidema cautioned that buffer stocks will soon be depleted, leaving patients without basic healthcare support.

Normally routed through Port Sudan, these medicines include antibiotics, antimalarials, and pediatric drugs. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher recently highlighted the Middle East conflict's toll on humanitarian supply chains, with particular stress on sub-Saharan Africa and Gaza. Rising transport costs further strain budgets already hit by donor cuts, with container freight rates surging by up to 30% as rerouted shipping around the Cape of Good Hope extends delivery times significantly. These disruptions could prove more damaging than Ukraine or COVID-19 initial supply challenges, underscored Zuidema.
