Hantavirus Outbreak Strikes Luxury Cruise: MV Hondius Crisis at Sea
The luxury cruise ship MV Hondius faces a hantavirus outbreak, resulting in deaths and severe illnesses onboard. After Cape Verde denied docking, the ship sails toward the Canary Islands for medical assistance. The outbreak occurred during an Antarctic expedition, with potential limited human-to-human transmission suspected by WHO.
A deadly hantavirus outbreak on the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius has prompted urgent measures as the vessel journeys towards the Canary Islands. Following a denial to dock from Cape Verde, international health authorities have coordinated the ship's reception in Europe.
The outbreak, which has resulted in multiple fatalities and serious illnesses, began early April after the Antarctic-bound vessel departed Argentina. Spain's health ministry has responded to requests from WHO and the EU to provide necessary medical assistance.
About 150 individuals from 23 countries are onboard the MV Hondius, where rare human-to-human transmission is suspected among close contacts. The Canary Islands will facilitate medical care and repatriation, adhering to strict safety protocols to protect local populations.
