An international study, analyzing data from 67 research groups worldwide and involving over 300,000 real-time mood reports, demonstrates a compelling connection between physical activity and improved mood. The findings, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, indicate that people's moods tend to improve with everyday movement.
Conducted by researchers including those from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, the study examined data from over 8,000 participants using smartphones and wearable devices. These tools helped capture daily routines, ranging from walking to household activities, revealing a positive association between physical activity and energetic arousal.
The research underscores that individuals with lower well-being experience the most significant benefits from physical activity. With evidence strong in both controlled lab settings and natural environments, the study calls attention to the need for further research on causality and individual differences in response to exercise.
