Indian-Origin Doctor Suspended in UK for Patient Relationship
Chirag Patel, an Indian-origin neurosurgeon, faces an eight-month suspension from a UK medical tribunal for misconduct involving a sexual relationship with a patient and improper prescription practices.
Chirag Patel, a neurosurgeon hailing from India, has received an eight-month suspension from a UK medical tribunal. The suspension follows revelations of a sexual relationship with one of his patients and unauthorized prescription activity, reportedly under the threat of blackmail.
Employed at a National Health Service hospital in Cardiff, Wales, Patel expressed deep regret over his actions involving Patient A, whom he treated over several years. In its report, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service highlighted the seriousness of Patel's actions, noting that the suspension serves both as a penalty and as a measure to protect public faith in the medical profession.
The tribunal acknowledged Patel's remorse and substantial efforts towards remediation, considering erasure from the medical register as excessively punitive. Patel acknowledges his role in the misconduct, attributing his prescription errors to external pressures, though not excusing his actions.
