Ashburton Hospital Begins Major Maternity Unit Upgrade

Work has started on a significant upgrade of the community birthing unit at Ashburton Hospital, marking a major investment in maternity services for the local community. The project is expected to enhance facilities for mothers, babies, and healthcare staff while ensuring families can continue accessing quality care close to home. Health Minister Simeon Brown announced that the redevelopment is now underway, describing it as an important step toward improving healthcare infrastructure in the region. The project carries a price tag of $3.2 million and is being funded through the Government's $100 million hospital infrastructure programme included in Budget 2025.

New facilities to support growing healthcare needs

Several improvements are planned as part of the redevelopment. Existing postnatal rooms will be reconfigured and refurbished to create a more streamlined layout, with additional ensuite bathrooms added to improve privacy and convenience for patients recovering after childbirth. The project will also establish a dedicated antenatal clinic area, complete with its own waiting room. This dedicated space is expected to make appointments more accessible and provide a more welcoming environment for expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy journey. Staff facilities within the unit will also be redesigned. Support areas will be relocated to a central position near the entrance, allowing healthcare workers to move more efficiently throughout the department and respond more quickly to patient needs.

According to Brown, the upgrade will help ensure the community birthing unit meets modern health and safety requirements while creating a more comfortable and practical environment for families and medical staff. He said investment in hospital infrastructure remains essential as demand for healthcare services continues to increase.
