The Free State Department of Health has inaugurated a Paediatric Cardiology Catheterisation Laboratory at Universitas Academic Hospital, expanding access to minimally invasive cardiac care for children in the province and neighbouring regions. The digitally enabled facility is designed to deliver high-precision interventions, ensuring faster diagnosis, safer procedures, and continuity of care while reducing the need for patients to travel long distances. Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi highlighted that the lab reflects the province's commitment to quality care through digitisation and advanced technology, providing services that are safer, faster, and closer to home for young patients.
Digitisation and Technology Driving Healthcare Improvements
The new cath lab is part of a broader initiative to modernize the province's healthcare system using digital and technological interventions. The Health Management System 2 (HMS²), an integrated electronic medical records system, is now operational in 19 of 33 hospitals, improving patient documentation, handovers, and data-driven decision-making. Imaging capabilities are being upgraded across the province with new radiology equipment and PACS systems, enhancing speed, security, and accuracy. Additional investments include adult cardiac catheterisation labs, interventional radiology suites, advanced MRI and PET-CT scanners, and robotic surgical systems, all of which strengthen the diagnostic and procedural capabilities of the Free State's healthcare facilities.
Wider Impact on Patients and Healthcare Delivery
These innovations are already improving patient outcomes by reducing complications, shortening hospital stays, and accelerating treatment timelines. Digitised records and modern imaging systems improve traceability, reduce medico-legal risk, and enable specialists to deliver more precise interventions. Expanding local capacity in paediatric cardiac care and other advanced procedures reduces travel times and waiting periods for patients, while also supporting the training of specialists within the province. Combined with investments in neonatal care, maternal health, and minimally invasive surgical technology, the initiatives are creating a future-ready, patient-centric healthcare system that benefits children, families, and communities across the Free State and beyond.
